Indian Language Wikipedias

advertisement

Indian language Wikipedias are growing slowly. The main reason for slow progress could be that most of the computers in India are pre-WinXP and do not have support for Unicode. Another reason could be the lack of (awareness of) tools to type Indian language scripts on computer.

The following is the list of top ten Indian language Wikipedias in the descending order of article count as on October 03, 2006. The number in the parentheses is registered users on that date. (The language name links to the specific Wikipedia).

  1. Telugu — 16,481 articles (630 users)
  2. Bengali — 11,580 (848)
  3. Marathi — 5,518 (699)
  4. Tamil — 4,578 (908)
  5. Kannada — 4,055 (784)
  6. Urdu — 2,970 (524)
  7. Hindi — 2,454 (772)
  8. Malayalam — 1,072 (776)
  9. Sanskrit — 635 (204)
  10. Kashmiri — 341 (130)

Telugu and Bengali Wikipedias are the first and second South Asian language Wikipeidas ever to cross 10,000 article mark.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.
